# MCP authentication and setup

> Connect an AI client using a scoped P2HS agent grant.

The agent-access model separates client registration, authorization context, consent, grants, and token issuance. Use the dashboard or the supported client setup flow to create a scoped connection.

## Setup principles

1. Register the AI client or service identity.
2. Select the workspace and project scope.
3. Grant only the tools and capabilities the client needs.
4. Complete any consent or confirmation step required by the operation.
5. Store the issued credential in the client’s secure secret store.

Do not paste production credentials into prompts, documentation, issue trackers, or generated source code. Revoke the grant when the client no longer needs access.

For connection and authorization problems, see [MCP troubleshooting](/content/support/troubleshooting/mcp).
